DENTAL INSURANCE

What to know before selecting a dental insurance plan

When you decide which type of Dental insurance to choose, you must understand that they have different benefits based on how much you pay for premium.

Here are some terms that you need to know:

(click on the + sign to open the response)

This is the amount you pay per person each calendar year before your plan starts paying (waived for covered cleanings, exams and x-rays).

This is the total amount per person that the plan will pay each calendar year.

Annual maximums can range from $500 to unlimited and is based
on the premium you choose. The lower the premium, the lower the annual maximum amount you get.

Unlike Health Insurance Coverage where you can access your benefits as soon as you pay your first premium, Dental insurance operates differently.

They have Waiting Periods – which means for some services you must wait a certain amount of time before you can access the benefits.

This is true for two type of services:  Basic Services and Major Services

For Basic Services, the waiting period is 6 months after you enroll and pay the Premium

For Major Services, the waiting period is 12 months after you enroll and pay the Premium

*** There is an exception for waiting period IF you ALREADY have a dental plan with a Dental Insurance and then you SWITCH to another Dental Insurance.

In this case, the waiting periods are waved because you currently have a Dental Plan.  However, keep in mind that it must be a CURRENT dental plan.  If you had a previous plan and you cancelled it, then it the exception WILL NOT be honored.

They are also some Dental Insurance Carriers that have NO waiting period.  You can access the benefits that they offer after you enroll and pay the Premium, however, your cost share will be more.

For example:

Normally, when you enroll you will have to wait 6 months to access Basic Services after the 6 months, you can now access your Basic Services and your cost will be 50% of your expenses.

For Dental Insurance carriers that do not have a waiting period, you can access Basic Services as soon as you pay your first premium but your cost for the first 6 months will be 80% and once you reach the 6 months, then you cost will be 50%.

This reduces your cost, if you are looking to use Basic and Major services right away, however, the Premium will be higher.

Dental insurance plans typically categorize services into three main tiers to determine how much you pay.

Preventive, Basic and Major Services

PREVENTIVE SERVICES

Preventive dental services are designed to maintain oral health and catch potential issues early. Most dental insurance plans prioritize these services, typically covering them at 100% with no waiting periods and often waiving the deductible.

Commonly Covered Preventive Services

1.   Routine Cleanings (Prophylaxis): Typically covered twice per year to remove plaque and tartar.
2.   Oral Examinations: Comprehensive and periodic check-ups to screen for decay, gum disease, and oral cancer.
3.   X-rays: Usually includes bitewing X-rays annually and full-mouth series every 3–5 years.
4.   Fluoride Treatments: Often fully covered for children under a certain age (e.g., 16 or 18) to strengthen enamel.
5.   Dental Sealants: Protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of permanent molars, typically restricted to children and teens.
6.   Space Maintainers: Devices used in children to keep space open for permanent teeth if a baby tooth is lost early.

Coverage Limits & Costs

Frequency Limitations: Insurance providers often limit services by time (e.g., “one cleaning every six months” or “twice in a calendar year”). Out-of-

Pocket Savings: Preventive care helps avoid the high costs of restorative work; for every $1 spent on prevention, an estimated $50 is saved on future expensive procedures.

No Waiting Period: Unlike major services which may have 6-12 month waiting periods, preventive care is usually available immediately upon the plan’s start date.

BASIC SERVICES

Basic Services generally address minor-to-medium tooth damage that has already occurred

Commonly Included Basic Services

1.   Fillings: Treatment for cavities or minor tooth decay using resin, composite, or amalgam materials.
2.   Simple Extractions: Non-surgical removal of visible teeth that are damaged or overcrowded.
3.   Emergency Treatment: Palliative care intended to provide immediate relief for dental pain.
4.   Periodontal Maintenance: Deep cleanings and treatments for early-stage gum disease (periodontics).
5.   Non-Routine X-rays: Specific diagnostic films that go beyond standard bitewings used in checkups.
6.   Root Canals: Depending on the insurer, these are sometimes classified as “basic,” though many modern plans now move them to the “major” tier

How Basic Coverage Typically Works

Basic Services are typically covered at 80%, leaving you to pay the remaining 20% after your deductible is met.  However, it is based on the PREMIUM that you will pay.  Some dental insurance companies with low premium, will cover only 50%.

Waiting Periods: Unlike preventive care, which is usually available immediately, basic services may have a waiting period of 6 to 12 months before coverage begins.

Deductibles: You must usually pay an annual deductible (often $50 per person) before the insurance starts paying its share for basic procedures

MAJOR SERVICES

Major services are generally the most complex and expensive procedures, aimed at restoring or replacing teeth and supporting structures

Common Major Dental Services

1.   Restorative Work: This includes crowns (caps), inlays, and onlays used to repair teeth with extensive damage.
2.   Prosthodontics: Services to replace missing teeth, such as bridges, complete or partial dentures, and dental implants (coverage for implants varies by plan).
3.   Endodontics: Procedures involving the tooth pulp, most notably root canals.
4.   Complex Oral Surgery: This includes impacted tooth removal (like wisdom teeth) and other surgical extractions.
5.   Periodontics: Treatment for advanced gum disease, such as surgical periodontics or gingivectomies.
6.   Orthodontics: Braces or aligners are often classified as major services, though they may have a separate lifetime maximum benefit.

Typical Coverage & Limitations

Major services are often covered at 50%, meaning the patient pays the remaining half.

Waiting Periods: Many plans require a waiting period, often 6 to 12 months, before major service coverage begins.

Annual Maximums: Costs for major work count toward your annual benefit maximum, which typically ranges from $1,000 to $2,000 per year.

Deductibles: You must usually meet your annual deductible (often $50 for individuals) before the insurance starts paying for major work.
